I am first and foremost a development economist and I have been involved in the development of the poorest of the poor for decades. I have seen how development projects have failed; I have witnessed increased levels of dependency resulting from so-called ‘development projects’; I have seen how corruption and nepotism has destroyed whole countries. The international community is only now starting to wake up to the potential of harnessing the people to direct and guide their own development. This is something I have been advocating for many years. Donors and recipient political overlords are at the core of the problem and they all suffer from mysticism.
